The Very First Moonwalk
It's 'one small step for man,' in today's video highlight as we take a look at digitally remastered footage from the infamous first man on the moon.
This episode charts the story of when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, as told by the astronauts and engineers themselves and featuring newly remastered footage.
In the meantime we take a look back at the historical launch of Apollo 11 in this clip from the incredible space series When We Left Earth
Did you know?
- When Buzz Aldrin joined Neil Armstronng out on the surface of the moon, he had to be careful not to lock the eagle's door becuase there was no outer handle
- The astronauts were the first to return samples from another planetary body. These damples were basalts, dark coloured igneous rocks that were approximately 3.7 billion years old
- A plaque was attached to the leg of the lunar vehicle, which was signed by President Nixon , Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin. It featured a map of the earth alongside the following inscription:
Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon
